Fair Result

Aberaeron 29 Laugharne 29

Division 3 West A is developing into a highly competitive league with a number of clubs vying for the ultimate glory and it was 2 of the fancied teams that locked horns on a windy Parc Drefach on Saturday. With a single loss apiece to date both knew the importance of the encounter with the Seagulls having succumbed in the early season confrontation in Laugharne in September, but unbeaten in a 10 match sequence since that setback. Both teams prefer the open game and the considerable support witnessed an excellent display with the final result a fair reflection for the afternoon. The hosts had been first off the mark and were rewarded with an early penalty by Rhodri Jenkins, only for Laugharne to take advantage virtually from the restart with a surge resulting in a try for No 8 Mikey Williams which was converted by centre by Tom Jameson. On the day it was apparent that Aberaeron's achilles heel was the lack of control and presence on the restart and the visitors soon capitalised with Williams scything through the defence for his second try, again converted by Jameson. Facing a 11 point deficit the tide then turned as firstly wing Ifan Slinger slid over in the corner with a superb conversion by Jenkins and following a forward surge where flanker Aaron Lewis and hooker Ceri Wyn Davies were involved, it was the latter that took the glory to give his side an unlikely lead. This however was not to last as further indecision from the restart gave Jameson a penalty opportunity which was duly converted to give his team the advantage at the break. The second half developed in similar fashion and again it was Williams who was first off the mark for his hatrick to extend the visitors lead. Back came the hosts with No 8 Tudur Jenkins dominating the lineout and the front row brigade in the form of prop Alex Danton emulating his hooker with a close range effort followed by another Jenkins conversion. And with the draw a likely result further confusion from the restart gave an opening for Laugharne for an overlap which wing Wil Evans gobbled up and a scent of victory. Alas the best was to come and with Aberaeron deep in their own half Jenkins created a break and from the 22 a superb kick ahead gave his speedy backline a glimpse of glory and it was centre Dafydd Llewelyn enhancing his true potential who made up 10metres on the defensive line to touch down and give Jenkins a simple conversion to tie the scores, Further pressure from the hosts failed to break the deadlock and the overall consensus was a fair result with 3 points apiece.
