Local Derby Success

Cardigan 5 Aberaeron 29.

In arguably their best performance of the season, Aberaeron produced a competent display against creditable opposition who would have been eager to build on their previous week's promising display. Poor conditions were not conducive to open rugby but credit to both sides for the endeavour to keep the ball alive. Aberaeron have developed a settled squad from the start of the season and another confidence building display will no doubt enhance that belief. The first half was to set the scene as the visitors comfortably took the ascendency. Early pressure was all confined to home territory and indiscretion led to an early penalty by Rhodri Jenkins. The restart followed a familiar pattern and no 8 Tudur Jenkins took the glory from a rolling maul, Jenkins again converting from near the touchline. Minutes from the half time whistle a scythyn break in midfield left defenders sprawling as Ollie Sawyer capped another strong display for his third of the campaign with another Jenkins conversion giving Aberaeron a 17 point advantage at the interval .

A half time pep talk saw Cardigan come out with improved determination and for the first quarter they matched the visitors resolve. It was very much nip and tuck for this period and it was Cardigan who were to benefit with a close range effort by ex Seagull Tom Taylor. This however was their last opportunity to sniff a reverse and Aberaeron reclaimed the advantage with another try for wing Rhodri Thomas. As the game progressed so did Aberaeron's supremacy up front with second row Gethin Hughes in particular prominent behind the front row stalwarts of Owain Wozencraft, Alex Danton and Sion Evans. The last score would probably have given Aberaeron the most pleasure as the visitors eight completely destroyed the home scrum to allow scrum half Gareth James to feed Jenkins to cross in the corner. Another conversion crowned an exemplary outside half display by Jenkins, and the only regret will have been to fail to gain the all important bonus point. A strong bench, fully utilised ,only served to enforce the supremacy on the day, and in the absence of the regular coaching staff, team manager Aled Davies who would have had a pleasant trip home on Saturday night.
