Success

Aberaeron 19 Cefneithin 16

Owen Williams was the toast of Parc Drefach on Saturday evening as his 14 point haul ensured a first success of the campaign and progress to the next round of the cup competition. In what was a dour affair the centre's kicking prowess lightened the gloom with 4 long range penalties and that proved decisive at the final reckoning as Cefneithin threatened to cause a surprise. Despite earlier conflicting reports the visitors arrived with a full compliment and gave Aberaeron more than a little cause for concern with the result in the balance up until the final whistle. The hosts applied the early pressure and Williams's brace of penalties provided the perfect fillip, with the backrow of Wallace, captain Lewis and the returning Tudur Jenkins effective. They were to be further rewarded as a flowing move following exerted pressure allowed Rhodri Thomas the room to cross in the corner. Another successful conversion by Williams gave breathing space, but Cefneithin then upped their game and a couple of penalties gave them the boost for an unlikely fightback. That renewed confidence brought further reward with a converted try minutes from the break bringing the scores even. The second half developed into a balanced encounter with Williams once again successful with the boot only to be cancelled out minutes later following indiscretion in the home ranks. With the clock ticking down, Williams's fourth success was to prove crucial and despite some jitters in the final moments, the final whistle signalled relief and ensured a place in the next round. The first success of the campaign will hopefully increase confidence with a testing encounter against Betws next on the agenda.
