The visit of Pembroke Dock Harlequins on Saturday signalled the start of a busy end of season for the Seagulls, with four rearranged games to complete a disjointed campaign. After an extended period of dry weather, the heavens opened just before kick-off and this unfortunately led to an error strewn encounter with the greasy ball going to ground on a regular basis, and especially in the first period. It was the visitors who were first out of the block, confining the hosts to their own half, but their only reward was a close-range penalty by outside half Euan McDonald. Aberaeron gradually gained parity, but the elements reduced any cohesive play to a minimum, and they were fortunate to bring the scores level with a Rhodri Jenkins penalty before the break. With the rain relenting for the second period, both teams improved on their handling, especially in the lineout where Llyr Davies and namesake Osian reigned supreme, and this led to a series of mauls near the Quins line, which eventually led to a try by second row Gethin Hughes. With only a score between the two sides, the result could have gone either way, but any doubt was erased late in the half as a swift break released wing Iwan Lloyd, and despite being outnumbered, a deft chip ahead and fortunate bounce saw the ball gratefully accepted by No 8 Bleddyn Thomas for the touchdown and ensure the spoils remained on home soil. Aberaeron will just be glad to be back playing in what has been a strange campaign and will now need to focus on a busy end of season., starting with St Davids at Parc Drefach next up.
