Sweet success

Pembroke Dock Quins 5 Aberaeron 12

With a much changed squad Aberaeron made the journey to South Pembs aiming to inflict a first defeat on the unlikely league front runners. A remarkable change of fortunes has seen the Quins notch up 4 consecutive wins, so this was sure to be a test of the Seagulls resolve and squad depth. There were several enforced changes due to injuries and non-availabilities in the pack with Ceri Davies taking over at hooker to allow captain Sion Evans to fill the back row berth and a new centre pairing of young Iwan Evans and Ollie Sawyer. However the new combinations bedded in quickly and Aberaeron were encamped in the Quins 22 for the first quarter, but their only reward being a single Rhodri Jenkins penalty. It was a hard and physical encounter at forward with the Seagulls getting the better of the heavier home eight with props Owain Wozencraft and Alex Danton forming a formidable front row with hooker Davies. This led to a series of infringements leading to a yellow card with sure fire Jenkins taking advantage with a second penalty. The Quins main weapon was centre Jack Price who continuously broke the first line only to be thwarted by Evans and Sawyer and not be outdone the centres strove to create their own chances which resulted in further infringements and resulting in 2 further yellow cards. Aberaeron were encamped in home territory for long periods after the turnaround and the odd foray by the hosts was thwarted with long touch finding clearances by Jenkins. The outside half continued his rich vein of form with a further 2 penalties and despite a late rally by the Quins their only success was a corner try by Price which went unconverted. This was indeed a test of credentials and to come away with a win was all the more pleasing considering the enforced changes.
