Last Minute

Aberaeron 15 Haverfordwest 13

September 1st 2018 is a notable date in the diary of Aberaeron RFC as that is the last occasion to date that they have tasted defeat on home soil. Such has been the fortress that is Parc Dreach that several much fancied teams have come and failed to register a rare success and that can be the case of the latest for Haverfordwest from South Pembs. Despite their progress in the Bowl competition the Seagulls have spluttered in the league since the turn of the year and it was a similar case on this occasion and indeed it took until the last minute for Haverfordwest to succumb for that record to remain intact. Aberaeron had got off to the worst possible start allowing the visitors to take the lead with an early penalty by Mikey Jones. Nevertheless it was very much an evenly contested match for the much of the period, the highlight being a kick and chase by Morgan Llewelyn which fell just short of the line and cleared. Resultant pressure however brought a penalty which struck the upright and the loose ball eventually found flanker Aaron Lewis who crashed over for a 3rd try in 2 games leaving a 5-3 scoreline at the break. The advantage swayed within minutes of the restart as Haverfordwest raised their game with a try from lock Jack Clancy and despite an opportunist effort from young wing Steffan Jones which finished just short the visitors extended the lead when lock Ashley George finished a concerted drive to cross and open up an 8 point lead. A crucial penalty by Rhodri Jenkins brought the hosts back into contention and with the clock ticking down Aberaeron produced a purple period which resulted in the forward eight creating an opening for Lewis Tomlins to claim the all important try. With the wind against, the conversion was always difficult but the attempt by Jenkins sailed through the uprights for a late late success and for that unbeaten run to remain intact. A well earned win albeit last minute but all eyes now turn to the Bowl semi final on 21st March where the Seagulls will aim to conquer Fairwater for a place in the Millenium Stadium and create real history. No pressure.
