Second Half Resolve

Llandybie 10 Aberaeron 53

In soaring temperature, it was the first round of the WRU Bowl competition for Aberaeron with a difficult looking trip to Div 3B West outfit Llandybie. A strong wind saw the visitors facing the elements in the first period and it was Llandybie now coached by former Wales coach Alan Lewis who dominated possession and territory, The pressure soon told and they soon opened their account with a front of the post penalty from Aled Tomlinson. Despite the pressure they failed to add to the score and at mid way through the half , and against the run of play, a spilled ball at a maul found the hands of Dafydd Llewelyn and the speedster showed a clean pair of heels to the try line with the conversion by Rhodri Jenkins.

Further Llandybie pressure eventually paid dividends with centre Nathaniel Butler breaking a mid field tackle to score under the post,Aled Tomlinson adding the extras .Back came the visitors and from a scrum Morgan Llewellyn broke the defence with a strong break before finding Dyfryg Dafis to score ,Rhodri Jenkins again adding the extras. Despite being reduced to 14 after a yellow card was shown for a professional foul, it was down to heroic defence by Aberaeron during this period to prevent further scores which must have taken a lot of energy out of the home team and to reduce confidence further Jenkins converted a penalty to give the visitors a half time lead of 17 -10. Relieved to be ahead for the second half was a totally different story, when Aberaeron showed their prowess playing with the wind,First up was a Rhodri Jenkins penalty, and within minutes after good interplay between backs and forwards debutant second row Jack Richards timed his pass to perfection for flanker Dan Lewis to score, again converted by Jenkins. Further tries were scored by Dafydd Llewellyn after Tom Slinger had punched holes in the defence, and converted again. Dan Lewis added his second from a driving maul and from the restart Lewis Tomlins ,showing his worth throughout the game , broke the defence for Tom Slinger to outdo defenders to sprint to the line from 40 metres, Jenkins adding both conversions. And with the clock ticking a clever worked pass from Rhodri Thomas put replacement wing Keiron Etheridge over to complete a good afternoon.

There were smiles all around from the coaching staff especially with the second half performance, noting youngsters Llyr Davies and Jack Richards in the second row, the strong carries from Lewis Tomlins ,and Tom Slinger, along and razor sharp Dafydd Llewellyn not to be outdone by Jenkins successful with 8 out of 9 kicks.
