Tough but entertaining

Tregaron 17 Aberaeron 53

Very often the form book hardly matters in a local derby and for much of the first half in this entertaining encounter this was very much the case. Aberaeron are enjoying an excellent campaign and were strong favourites with Tregaron in the lower regions of the league. But for a period in the first half the Seagulls found the hosts a very difficult nut to crack and had to battle hard to gain the advantage at the break. Initial signs were good for the visitors as they opened the scoring in the first few minutes. Centre Tom Slinger who was a thorn all afternoon in the home backline with his strong running brushed aside several would be tacklers to cross for the first try and Rhodri Jenkins duly added the first of his five conversions. A missed move however allowed Tregaron to hit back with a converted try by Gethin Williams. The advantage lasted a few minutes as Jenkins who was awarded the man of the match then converted a penalty and this was followed by some excellent interplay resulting in Bleddyn Thomas crossing for the second try. Not to be outdone Tregaron took full advantage of an error in the visitors defence to gain a dubious score by Chris Wilks with the referee unsighted with a debatable grounding and against the odds they took the lead with a converted try by veteran prop Dorian Pugh. Just as it looked that a surprise was on the cards Aberaeron hit back with two quickfire efforts. Firstly a scything break by centre Dyfrig Dafis gave wing Thomas the opening for a scoring pass to full back Morgan Llewelyn and another barnstorming Slinger break released Rhodri Thomas for a converted try leaving a 27- 17 scoreline at half time. Aberaeron's physicality was proving an issue for the home side and with Gareth James at scrum half always threatening, it was of little surprise that the second half went by form. Centre Dafis somehow weaved his way over the line and a determined Owain Wozencraft registered a rare success to douse the home fire. A well rehearsed move along the backline then opened up the field allowing Rhodri Thomas in for his second of the day and standoff Jenkins made one for himself with a conversion to complete the scoring. A potential surprise was duly averted with a competent display by the Seagulls and a welcome bonus point as they strive towards the league summit. There was much to admire for the strong following with the front row and replacements always in command with Geth Hughes a mentor for young Llyr Davies in the boiler house and a settled back row of Dan Lewis, Aaron Lewis and Tudur Jenkins. It bodes well for the remaining games.
