Tough but entertaining

Aberaeron 17 Laugharne 5

Perfect conditions curtsy of a considerable effort by the ground staff proved the ideal setting for this crucial encounter between 2 teams aiming for the summit for Division 3 West. Aberaeron, on a 3 game success knew a win was paramount to keep momentum both for the league and forthcoming Bowl cup quarter final and the final scoreline keeps both dreams alive. It was always likely to be a tight affair and Aberaeron could not have wished for better start as they took the lead after the opening skirmish as a break from full back by Morgan Llewelyn eventually found brother Dafydd who outpaced the defence to cross near the posts, making the conversion by the reliable boot of Rhodri Jenkins a formality. The Seagulls were encamped for the majority of the half in the visitors half but on more than one occasion were found to be guilty of over elaboration and lack of clinical finish to duly extend the lead. Majority possession from the front eight with hooker Sion Evans apparent in the tight and loose provided ample openings but the second crucial score only materialised mid way with a break by man of the match Ollie Sawyer finding Owen Williams to beat his opponent to cross near the posts. Jenkins successful with the conversion. With the home support expectant of further success as the half progressed so did Laugharne's self belief increase and they were were rewarded with a try minutes from the break albeit from a dubious knock on in the process to leave Aberaeron ahead by 9 points at the half time. The second half developed into a battle of attrition with neither side exerting supremacy despite the efforts of the combatative Gethin Jenkins at second row and strong running Aaron Lewis not underestimating the overall forward effort, but with gilt edged openings the hosts were guilty of not making the most of their limited opportunities and a single Jenkins penalty was a scant reward. Laugharne's losing point attempt failed to materialise and they will be left to reflect on a tough afternoon. On the other hand Aberaeron's season is very much alive with the much anticipated cup encounter with Oakdale a considerable test of their credentials. It promises to be an entertaining climax to the season.
