Haverfordwest 23 Aberaeron 21
Aberaeron's promotion ambitions suffered another setback with a second consecutive defeat on the road this time against fellow hopefuls Haverfordwest. Invariably suffering a little from a hangover following the cup success of the previous week their cause was not helped with the injury jinx striking again in the very first minute. Second row Richard Francis was the unfortunate player on this occasion suffering a head injury which delayed the game by 40 minutes. Pleasing to hear there will be no lasting effect although his presence will now be missed by the enforced 3 weeks absence. The restart however could not have gone better as the visitors raced into a 13 point lead. 2 penalties by Rhodri Jenkins were followed by a try from centre Tom Slinger which the outside half also converted. The hosts had the slope advantage in the first period and they slowly worked their way back into the game mainly due to a strong set piece and they were rewarded with tries from Mattie Phillips and Elgan Roberts, Mickey Jones adding a conversion to bring the interval score of 13 -12 to the visitors. After the turnaround a penalty from Jones gave ,Haverfordwest, the lead, and they soon increased the advantage with an unconverted try from lively winger Jack Evans. Aberaeron regrouped in the last quarter and found another gear and the pressure gave Jenkins the chance to reduce the arrears with a penalty. With four minutes to go they regained the lead as young Steffan Jones who showed real promise finished off an excellent worked move with a try in the corner. Alas it was not be when the referee awarded a penalty to the homesters, and ice cool Jones struck over the winner, much to the delight of the home supporters. Haverfordwest just about deserved the victory but Aberaeron can be proud of a resilient performance and will hope to get back on the winning trail with 2 home games next on the agenda.
