Tough encounter

Aberaeron 33 Haverforwest 3

A period of heavy rain resulting in the presence of surface water nearly caused a postponement of Aberaeron's home encounter with Haverfordwest, but fortunately conditions improved in time for the game to go ahead. Rather unfortunately, Haverfordwest arrived at Parc Drefach without a recognised front row, and the game went ahead with uncontested scrums. Despite playing into the strong wind it was the Seagulls who secured the first try with the imposing Gethin Hughes crossing for his third of the campaign with Rhodri Jenkins adding the conversion. But despite being without a front row, it was the visitors to dominated from the restart and they reduced the arrears with a penalty from Liam Mainwaring. The hosts having weathered the storm then struck back with number eight Tudur Jenkins crossing from a quick penalty leaving giving Aberaeron a 12-3 advantage at the break.
With the wind behind their backs after the turnaround Aberaeron soon increased their lead with another try from man of the match Tudur Jenkins, with namesake Jenkins adding his second conversion. With the home team hunting for the bonus point try,the visitors had other ideas ,and they dominated possession and came at Aberaeron in their direct and confrontational way and pressed hard for a long period.
However, defensive strength has been developed by Justin Lloyd and his coaching staff to become one the Seagulls main weapons epitomised not least by hooker Sion Evans and having withstood that period of pressure they came back with an excellent worked try from strong running Aaron Lewis, with Jenkins again converting. With the bonus point secure the icing on the cake came from a well worked move by the Aberaeron backline with replacement wing Owen Williams touching down in the corner, Jenkins converting ,for a final score 33-3 and end a difficult afternoon in miserable conditions. Not unexpectedly the game was strewn with a high error count and much work will be required by newly appointed ground staff team to ensure the pitch is playable for the next home match in 2 weeks time.
