Back to winning ways

Aberaeron 41 Laugharne 12

It was back to winning ways for Aberaeron as they took the honours in a highly entertaining game at Parc Drefach. Despite several enforced changes the home side rediscovered their expansive game and coupled with a dominant set piece the 5 try salvo was due reward and a welcome bonus point win. Intention was clear from the first whistle with pressure on the visitors line resulting in a close range effort by Tudur Jenkins. The touchline conversion was the first of Rhodri Jenkins perfect afternoon, and the outside half was to claim a total of 16 points from the boot. Laugharne to their credit were good match and the first half developed into a close encounter with the visitors just unable to cross the whitewash. After Jenkins converted his first penalty of the afternoon, more pressure brought reward with flanker Aaron Lewis the benefactor. Laugharne's efforts were finally rewarded with a close effort by Carwyn Jones but Jenkins opened up a 15 point advantage at the break with another penalty. The opening minutes of the second half was relatively quiet with both sides defences to the fore, but the last quarter provided the excitement with swift interpassing amongst forward and backs alike carving huge holes in the Laugharne rearguard. A break from midfield where Ollie Sawyer and Dyfrig Dafis were always looking dangerous saw a galloping Rhydian Harries deftly collecting the final pass to extend the lead. Dafis was to claim reward for his excellent afternoon's efforts with a 2 try salvo in the final minutes with no little help from brothers Rhodri and Bleddyn Thomas on the wings, and benefiting from the scything breaks of scrum half Gareth James. The visitors did have the final say as a cruel bounce of the ball gave Tom Davies the easy chance to score. This did little to detract from the satisfaction of the home support and it is a satisfied coaching staff that will look forward to the next challenge away to Neyland on Saturday.
