Pontyates 35 Aberaeron 13 After an 8 week absence it was league resumption for Aberaeron with a visit to Pontyates. Unfortunately for the visitors it was also cup weekend and it was a case again of the old permit system making a mockery of the league standings with players imported from non participating clubs in higher leagues . The hosts on this occasion were able to maximise the system with virtually half their team brought in from higher levels after only having the bare 15 the previous Saturday. A damp and dour afternoon therefore was the least attractive on the resumption and in the doom and gloom Aberaeron were second best despite being on the offensive for their share of the game. The opening advantage went the way of Pontyates with an early try, but Aberaeron soon struck back with a Sion Evans penalty. It was nip and tuck for most of the half until the hosts scored 2 quickfire tries before the interval for an 18- 6 advantage at the break with another penalty the only reward for the visitors. Ponty extended the advantage minutes after the restart after confusion in the home defence but Aberaeron fought back with a concentrated effort resulting in a close range try by send row Gethin Hughes, duly converted by Rhodri Jenkins. The home team were subjected to concentrated pressure and their defence eventually yielded with 3 yellow cards. Unfortunately the visitors could not capitalise on numerical supremacy and it was the hosts who finished with a flourish to complete and unexpected success. So the resumption of the season became a little of a non event and with only a meaningless encounter with Newcastle Emlyn 2nds next Saturday remaining, Next year will hopefully will bring better cheer and avoid the massive disappointment that the WRU could and should have avoided this time round.
